Description
This is one of the largest stupas in the world; Boudhanath Stupa, in Kathmandu.
Every morning we would awake at dawn to find hundreds of people already walking around-and-around in a clockwise direction spinning prayer wheels and muttering various chants and prayers. Numbers would swell during the early morning until packed with many hundreds of locals doing ‘laps’. Add to this prostrating devotees, local dogs, burning juniper, and thousands of pigeons – the whole place was alive with activity, passion, and religious practice.
Located on an ancient trade route, Tibetan Buddhist merchants have been resting here and offering prayers at this structure for well over 1,000 years.
We did the same.
