Description
Jono takes a last look back over the Fox Glacier after a day of ice climbing. This glacier has retreated a staggering amount in my life time. I first visited in my 20’s, in 2002 when the glacier bulging full, high up the valley walls and touching the rain forest. You could step directly from the rainforest onto hard ice.
Here, in 2008 there is some retreat up the valley, but nothing compared to its current position. The fox glacier is not even visible from this point any more, and there’s no safe pedestrian access onto the hard ice.
